The Hong Kong Dance Company will bring its large-scale dance drama "Kung Fu Artistry: Bruce Lee's No Way as Way" at the Shanghai International Dance Center in August.

Celebrating the 85th anniversary of the birth of martial arts legend Bruce Lee (1940-2025), the production marks a major cultural exchange between Hong Kong and Shanghai.

The Shanghai engagement marks the production's highly anticipated Chinese mainland debut after a critically lauded global premiere in Hong Kong in November and December last year, which drew over 8,000 people over two weeks.

A Tribute to a Global Icon

The first globally recognised Chinese film celebrity, Bruce Lee, was named one of TIME's "20th Century Heroes and Icons."

A philosophy major and Wing Chun student of Ip Man from the age of 16, Lee changed global notions of Chinese identity through martial arts. He developed Jeet Kune Do and introduced the notion of "using no way as way, having no limitation as limitation," which put "Kung Fu" in the English dictionary and changed how the West viewed Chinese people.

The production draws particular inspiration from Lee's iconic 1972 film Fist of Fury, in which his character Chen Zhen shattered the "No Dogs or Chinese Allowed" sign – a cinematic moment that dismantled decades of national inferiority with the defiant declaration: "I am Chinese!"

Where Martial Arts Meets Contemporary Dance

Kung Fu Artistry represents a bold cross-disciplinary fusion, combining martial arts with contemporary dance, ink-wash-inspired multimedia stage design, and jazz music.

Professional dancers with over eight years of martial arts training bring Lee's philosophy and artistic spirit to life through powerful yet graceful physical storytelling.

Founded in 1981, the Hong Kong Dance Company is celebrating its 45th anniversary this year. As one of Asia's leading dance institutions, HKDC is known for blending Chinese cultural heritage with contemporary innovation, creating works that resonate with audiences worldwide while preserving traditional artistic values.
