Kunqu Classic Set for Four-Day Shanghai Run
An epic masterpiece of Kunqu Opera – the Shanghai Kunqu Opera Company's full-length production of "The Palace of Eternal Youth" – will be staged at the Shanghai Majestic Theater from December 11 to 14.
This 10-hour timeless love story recounts the romance between Emperor Xuanzong and his beloved concubine, Yang Yuhuan, of the Tang Dynasty (AD 618-907) through four straight performances.
This year marks the 20th anniversary of the company's full-length version of this classic work. Following its successful tour in Chengdu, Xi'an, and Suzhou, the production returns to Shanghai, inviting audiences to experience a moving story set against the backdrop of an ancient empire's destiny, where personal passions intertwine with the currents of history.
Kunqu Opera, one of China's oldest theatrical traditions, originated in Kunshan, Jiangsu Province. In 2001, UNESCO named it a "Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity," recognizing its cultural significance and lasting artistic legacy.
The company spent three years on the full-length production since 2005. The play uses imaginative artistry and dramatic tension while retaining the original's lyrical essence.
The production's originality can be seen in its unique stage performances, movements, vocal styles, and music for scenes that have never been staged before.
