'Notre-Dame de Paris' Returns to Shanghai
The French musical "Notre-Dame de Paris" has made a highly anticipated return to Shanghai. The classic production, based on Victor Hugo's novel of the same name, is set to captivate audiences with 22 consecutive shows.
With lyrics by Luc Plamondon and music by Riccardo Cocciante, "Notre-Dame de Paris" is a landmark work in French musical theater. Since its premiere in Paris in 1998, the musical has been adapted into seven different language versions.
Even when performed in French, many of its iconic songs, such as "Le Temps des Cathédrales" (The Age of the Cathedrals) and "Belle" (Beautiful), are so beloved that Shanghai audiences often sing along during the encore.
Set in Paris in 1482, the story follows three men who fall in love with Esmeralda, a beautiful Gypsy girl. The archdeacon's love is possessive; the guard captain Phoebus's love is frivolous and selfish; and only Quasimodo, the bell-ringer with a disfigured appearance, loves her with pure and noble devotion. Complex human emotions collide amidst the currents of fate.
In this round of Shanghai performances, Daniel Lavoie reprises his role as the archdeacon Frollo. As a veteran actor from the 1998 premiere, he has portrayed the character for nearly three decades.
"I hope I can perform forever," he said. "Every show is a precious memory, and I cherish them all."
Angelo Del Vecchio, who plays Quasimodo, is already a familiar face to many Shanghai theatergoers. Esmeralda is portrayed by Elhaida Dani, Flo Carli plays the poet Gringoire, while Martin Giroux takes on the role of Phoebus.
The Shanghai Culture Square has also organized guided introduction and backstage tours, offering audiences a comprehensive insight into the creation of this timeless masterpiece.
