Piano Virtuosos to Strike Chord as Yuja Wang's Recital Tickets Sell Out in 5 Minutes
A series of virtuoso piano recitals are set to grace Shanghai's stage in early summer, with tickets for Yuja Wang's show selling out within five minutes of going on sale on Friday.
A five-time Grammy Award nominee, Wang is known for her electrifying intensity, masterful technique, and vivid personality, which have retained her status as a focal figure in the classical music world.
The Shanghai performance is part of her Asian tour, where she will present works by Schubert, Rachmaninoff, Bach, Ravel, as well as Sofia Gubaidulina's "Chaconne" and Thomas Adès's "Powder Her Face."
Although tickets for Wang's recital are sold out, classical music fans in Shanghai still have a handful of choices:
On May 16, young pianist An Tianxu, who won fourth prize at the 16th International Tchaikovsky Competition in Russia, will showcase his dazzling virtuosity with Godowsky's arrangements and Rachmaninoff's "Études-Tableaux." Notably, as part of the Shanghai Oriental Art Center's Citizens' Concert series, ticket prices for this recital are set at up to 80 yuan (US$11.7).
That same evening, young pianist Chen Junyan, silver medalist of the 2024 Leeds International Piano Competition in Britain, will present a diverse interpretation of works by Couperin, Rachmaninoff, and others.
On June 18, Zhang Haochen, gold medalist of the 2009 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in the United States, will bring his "Beyond the Sonata" recital, performing classic sonatas by Beethoven and Schumann.
On July 15 and 17, Richard Clayderman's "Forever Love" concerts will feature beloved pieces, including many film soundtracks. The French maestro will also delight Chinese audiences by arranging classic melodies such as "Ballade pour Adeline" and "Lyphard Melody" with the "Butterfly Lovers."
