Rock Meets Royal Tragedy in South Korea Musical 'Shadow'
A new version of the South Korean rock musical "Shadow" will premiere at Shanghai's China Grand Theater on August 22.
The plot is based on the real-life historical occurrence known as the "Imo Incident." King Yeong-jo confined his son, Crown Prince Sado, to a rice chest in 1762, and Sado died eight days later.
In the musical, as the prince dies, he travels back in time and meets the young Yeong-jo – a youngster shivering beneath the weight of power – revealing a previously unknown aspect of his father.
"Although the historical background of the story is in Korea, our version does not explicitly specify the country," said South Korean director Dimo Hyun-jun Kim.
"After all, human emotions are universal," he added. "This story is about two people who could have been close yet failed to truly understand each other. It belongs to all parents and children of this era, to everyone who longs to be understood."
South Korean screenwriter Jane Hur uses the metaphor of a full moon waning to express Sado's idea: people often grow closer not when they strive for perfection, but when they come to understand their flaws and darkness.
The rice chest in the musical is also given multiple metaphorical layers: it's a physical wooden chest in which Sado is imprisoned and also represents the "ruler-subject" system that traps Yeong-jo.
It can also be considered a "compressive unconscious space" built up by societal expectations, family scrutiny, or self-imposed pressure, making people close themselves off.
Many of the songs featured in the musical employ a rock style. Kim believes that Sado's repression, anger, and longing for freedom resonate strongly with rock music.
He believes such an atmospheric approach can highlight the conflicts between characters, as well as the serious emotions surrounding father-son relationships and self-identity.
