The timeless Tchaikovsky classic "The Nutcracker" will be performed by Shanghai Ballet at Shanghai International Dance Center from December 24 to 27.

A co-production of Shanghai Ballet and Shanghai Grand Theater, this (Shanghai Grand Theater) version, a work by British choreographer Derek Deane, premiered in 2010 and has since captured the local audience with its Victorian scenery, fantasy magic and folk dance with Chinese elements.

To provide a fresh perspective on this classic work, a new media art team was invited to design the stage, while the costumes and other styles were also updated. The reimagined "The Nutcracker Plus Version" offers the audience an immersive experience of the Victorian-era fairy tale.

In 2000 and 2004, the Shanghai Ballet introduced two productions choreographed by Deane: "Swan Lake" and "Romeo and Juliet." In subsequent years, he created several productions specifically for the Shanghai Ballet, including "The Nutcracker" (Shanghai Grand Theater Version, 2010), "Swan Lake" (Grand Version, 2015), "Hamlet" (2016), "The Sleeping Beauty" (2018), "The Lady of the Camellias" (Shanghai Ballet Version, 2019), and "Le Fantôme de l' Opéra" (2023).

He served as the artistic director of Shanghai Ballet from 2018 to 2023 and became the artistic consultant in 2024.
