Shanghai Chinese Orchestra Concludes Season With Lantern Festival Celebration Concert
The Shanghai Chinese Orchestra will celebrate the traditional Lantern Festival with a concert titled "Rejoice and Reunion" on Friday, also marking the conclusion of the orchestra's 2025-26 performance season.
This year's Lantern Festival falls on March 3, and the early celebration on February 27 will be jointly conducted by the orchestra's resident conductors Yao Shenshen and Peng Fei.
The repertoire features a blend of Chinese and Western elements, offering audiences a melodious Chinese New Year memory through both traditional folk music and fashionable expressions of Shanghai-style Chinese music.
The concert will kick off with the cheerful "Spring Festival Overture." Other highlights in the first half include "Tango Apasionado" featuring the bamboo flute and orchestra, as well as "Rhapsody in Blue" performed with the saxophone and orchestra.
The familiar melody of "The Bund" will open the second half. A striking contrast between tenderness and heroism will be presented through Zhao Jiping's compositions "Qiao's Grand Courtyard" and "Hero's Song."
The suona and orchestra will collaborate on "Fighting the Tiger up the Mountain," an excerpt from the renowned Peking Opera "Taking Tiger Mountain by Strategy."
The concert will conclude with a three-part suite centered around the theme of horses, in celebration of the Chinese Year of the Horse, bringing audiences blessings of vigor and progress symbolized by the sound of galloping hooves.
Many pieces from this concert were already presented by the Shanghai Chinese Orchestra at Theater YOUNG on the fifth day of the Chinese New Year – the day to welcome the God of Wealth, receiving an enthusiastic response.
Interested music lovers can bring their families on Friday to once again experience the joy and harmony of traditional Chinese music.
