Spanish dance group to perform in Shanghai
Spanish Dance Spectacle "Querencia" by Compañía Antonio Najarro will be staged at the Shanghai International Dance Center Theater on May 22-23, 2026.
Querencia, from the Spanish verb "querer," meaning "to desire," is a safe, happy, and strong place like home.
Featuring 14 dancers and composed of 11 scenes, the visually rich production integrates flamenco, traditional folklore, and avant-garde stylization into a cohesive aesthetic experience – one that honors ancestral forms while asserting a distinctly contemporary sensibility through its orchestration of music, costume and choreographic architecture.
The production's visual identity is unmistakably Spanish. Cordobés hats, Manila shawls, sweeping capes, and the majestic bata de cola feature as active choreographic elements, wielded by dancers who strike their own live castanet percussion.
In 2002, dancer and choreographer Antonio Najarro founded Compañía Antonio Najarro, creating international productions in classical ballet, flamenco, and contemporary dance. As the youngest director of the Spanish National Ballet in 2011, he introduced new approaches to Spanish dances.
