Step Into A World Of Pure Imagination When Broadway Magic Lands In Shanghai
The Broadway musical "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" will transport Shanghai audiences to a realm of imagination and compassion when it is performed here this month.
The protagonist, Charlie Bucket, comes from a humble background and, through a stroke of luck, finds a golden ticket that grants him access to Willy Wonka's enigmatic chocolate factory.
Unlike the other children, Charlie is not motivated by greed or pride; instead, he approaches his adventure with honesty, imagination, and a sense of wonder.
Roald Dahl's renowned story has been translated into 55 languages and has sold more than 20 million copies globally. London's West End first staged it in 2013, enjoying a successful four-year run before moving to Broadway, where it won two Laurence Olivier Awards out of five nominations.
The China tour features a visually enhanced Broadway production with multimedia technology. Audiences can enjoy Augustus Gloop's tumble into the chocolate river, Violet Beauregarde's transformation into a blueberry, and the iconic glass elevator rising above the stage.
With music and lyrics by the Tony Award-winning team of Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, the score blends new original numbers with popular melodies from the 1971 film, including "The Candy Man," "Golden Ticket," and "Pure Imagination."
The songs will be performed live by a professional 10-member band on stage. A total of 12 performances will be staged until November 23.
Since September, five actors and two music directors have been visiting seven elementary schools in Shanghai as part of the arts education programs of the Shanghai Culture Square. Their goal has been to teach the children to sing the popular song from the production, "Pure Imagination."
On November 14, nearly 100 children will take the stage alongside the performers to sing this song, which embodies themes of hope and fantasy.
