The staged concert version of the acclaimed Tony Award-winning musical "Natasha, Pierre and The Great Comet of 1812" will be presented at the Shanghai Grand Theater from May 15 to 24.

The musical features music, lyrics, and a book by Dave Malloy, drawing inspiration from a 70-page excerpt of Leo Tolstoy's 1869 epic novel "War and Peace." Following its Asian premiere in Shanghai in 2024, the musical is making a comeback with a fresh appearance.

Director Hu Xiaoqing notes that the new version turns the grand stage spectacle from two years ago into a more nuanced emotional experience — the actors will continue to engage with the audience, fostering a genuine and heartfelt connection.

The rich and captivating music remains a significant highlight of “The Great Comet.”

“This production brings together various genres — electronic, folk, traditional Russian music, and opera,” according to music consultant Fiz Shapur.

"There is something in this vibrant musical tapestry for everyone to grasp and relate to."

The latest version features innovative lighting and stage design, incorporating a two-tiered stage and multimedia screen installations that evoke the visual imagery of a "comet's trajectory."

Grace Mouat and Ashley Day, hailing from London's West End, join the cast as Natasha and Anatole, respectively. Grace Mouat captured the spotlight with her performance as the "super swing" in the musical “SIX,” where she took on the responsibility of understudying all six queens.

Ashley Day formerly took on the male lead in the West End production of “An American in Paris.”

The character of Pierre will remain in the capable hands of Broadway actor Cooper Grodin.

"Over the years, I have witnessed the steadily improving operational standards of local productions in Shanghai, and the audiences here are ready for a profound work like The Great Comet,” he said.
