Tugan Sokhiev to Lead Vienna Philharmonic in Shanghai With Lang Lang
Russian conductor Tugan Sokhiev, who will conduct the 2027 New Year's Concert of the Vienna Philharmonic, is set to lead the orchestra at the Shanghai Oriental Art Center on October 19 and 20. They will be joined by Chinese pianist Lang Lang.
The concert on October 19 focuses on pure German-Austrian classics. Lang will perform Beethoven's "Piano Concerto No. 4 in G major" – the composer's most lyrically beautiful piano concerto. It will be followed by Brahms' "Symphony No. 2 in D major."
The program for the second-day concert includes Mozart's "Symphony No. 40 in G minor" and Tchaikovsky's "Symphony No. 4 in F minor."
Lang's collaboration with the Vienna Philharmonic began with a performance at Vienna's Schönbrunn Palace in 2005. Over the past two decades, they have performed together more than 70 times. Their last joint appearance at the Shanghai Oriental Art Center was in 2018, when Lang performed Mozart's "Piano Concerto No. 24."
Sokhiev is the last disciple of the legendary maestro Ilya Musin and formerly served as Music Director of the Bolshoi Theater. He has worked closely with top-tier orchestras in Europe and the United States, including the Berlin Philharmonic and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.
Tickets for these two concerts are also the first to go on sale among all performances by top-tier orchestras in Shanghai this autumn, as the months of October and November are typically the peak season for world-renowned orchestras to visit the city.
