Three-Legged Police Dog and His Trainer Rewrite Fate Together
In a police dog base in China's Henan Province, one unlikely hero is defying fate. His name is Barton – a Belgian Malinois born with only three functioning legs.
Once deemed unfit to live and even recommended for euthanasia by veterinarians, Barton has beaten every odd to become a certified riot police dog, reported China Central Television.
Born in June 2019 at the police dog breeding base of the Xichuan County Public Security Bureau, Barton came from a distinguished working-dog lineage. But his left foreleg was severely underdeveloped, making it difficult for him to walk. The vets believed he would never live a normal life and suggested euthanasia as the most humane choice.
The trainers couldn't bring themselves to end his life. Moved by his will to live, they found him a foster home, hoping he could enjoy a quiet life. But true to his Malinois nature, Barton was too spirited and strong-willed for ordinary family life. Before long, his foster family returned him to the police unit, according to the CCTV report.
Back at the kennel, Barton would watch other dogs train, hopping on his three legs as if desperate to join them. His persistence caught the attention of Li Xiaodong, a seasoned police dog handler with over two decades of experience. Li decided to take a chance on the determined pup.
At the beginning, Barton stumbled, fell, and scraped himself countless times — but every time, he got back up. Li soon realized Barton had something rare: unwavering focus, tremendous bite strength, and the fearless heart of a true police dog.
Two years later, in July 2021, Barton did what few thought possible. He passed the national police dog certification test and officially joined the ranks as a riot dog. To ease the strain on Barton's remaining limbs, Li even designed a custom harness to carry him across difficult terrain, CCTV said.
But Barton wasn't the only one who had struggled. Years earlier, Li had lost his first police dog, Kelin — his loyal partner of nearly a decade. The loss devastated him, and he vowed never to train another dog again. Then, in 2016, a severe training injury left Li with a fractured leg and months of painful recovery. He could no longer run or train as before, and his spirit dimmed.
That changed when Barton came into his life. Watching the three-legged dog throw himself into every task, never once giving up, reignited something in Li. Inspired by Barton's strength, Li began rebuilding himself, training alongside his resilient partner, according to the report.
Together, they have healed each other — a man who once lost his purpose and a dog who was never supposed to survive. Against all odds, they've proven that courage and loyalty can overcome any limitation.
