Xiamen School Scraps Student's Win for Racing in Skirt and Wig
A high school in southeastern China has revoked a male student's sprint victory after he competed in a skirt and wig, ruling the act a violation of "sports spirit" – a decision that has ignited heated debate online.
The incident took place on November 20 at Xiamen Songbai Middle School, as reported by The Beijing News on Friday. According to fellow students, the boy was dressed as a character from a video game during the school sports event.
The school annulled his first-place finish citing a breach of "athletic ethos" and also stripped his class of eligibility for the "Model Class" award.
A staff member said the school has been inundated with inquiries and will issue an official statement.
The Xiamen Siming District Education Bureau confirmed that relevant department has intervened and will guide communication between the student and the school.
