China Upgrades High-Speed Rail Pet Transport Service
China's high-speed rail pet transport service has been upgraded, offering more convenience for pet owners! According to updates released on December 10, several train options on the 12306 ticketing platform now feature a special "pet" icon, signaling that the route supports pet transport.
Since its pilot launch along the Beijing-Shanghai High-Speed Railway in April, the service has expanded to 40 stations and 54 trains, covering popular travel routes across east and southwest China.
The latest upgrade introduces several key improvements:
1. Online reservations can now be made one day in advance rather than two. Bookings submitted before 12pm apply to the next day, while those after 12pm apply to the third day.
2. Each passenger may now transport up to two pets, doubling the previous limit.
3. A one-click filter for eligible trains has been added, and a pet transport entry automatically appears after a ticket is purchased.
4. The system now supports unaccompanied pet shipments, allowing animals to travel without their owners.
To ensure safety and comfort, pets are placed in smart transport boxes equipped with air-circulation systems, temperature and humidity sensors, and noise and odor control. These containers are stored in dedicated cargo compartments, separate from passenger areas. Staff members check the compartments every two hours and keep the boxes throughout the journey.
Many pet owners help their animals adjust by doing advance training or preparing familiar bedding, and overall feedback has been very positive.
For Expat Travelers
The 12306 ticketing platform can be switched to an English interface for easier use by foreigners. Here's how:
1. Open the 12306 app, tap "我的," then tap the settings icon in the top right.
2. Tap "版本切换" and choose "English Version."
3. Register or log in with your passport info.
Please note: While both the 12306 website and app offer English interfaces, the special "pet" icon which indicates routes that support pet transport is currently available only in the Chinese version.
For English service and assistance, you can contact the hotline at 12306 or 95572.
