[First in SH] Big Brands Anchor Shanghai's Latest Openings

First in Shanghai is our column documenting the rise of Shanghai's "debut economy," a model built on being first, fast, and everywhere at once. What started as a policy initiative has morphed into a citywide phenomenon: part economic strategy, part cultural spectacle. In this series, we explore how brands – both local and global – are choosing Shanghai not just to launch products, but to create moments. It's retail as ritual, commerce as event, and we're here to unpack what it all means.

Shanghai's retail scene has gone and reinvented itself again, as it likes to do every few months, rolling out another batch of flagship temples and "concept spaces" designed to convince you that shopping is a cultural activity. This round brings Boucheron planting its first Chinese mainland flagship in Xintiandi, Sporty & Rich slipping into HKRI Taikoo Hui with its debut boutique, and Garcon By Garcon tentatively cracking open the doors on its first brick-and-mortar spot. Holoholo has shown up with a lifestyle-driven drinkware playground, and M Stand is trying something new with its Maison concept café.

Taken together, it's a neat little snapshot of the city's bottomless appetite for the next new thing – global brands and local upstarts alike tossing fresh ideas into the mix, keeping Shanghai firmly in its role as the place where trends come to see if they can survive.

Boucheron | 宝诗龙

Boucheron, one of France's oldest high-jewelry maisons, known for poetic design, big heritage energy, and a talent for making luxury feel a little mythical, opened its first flagship store on the Chinese mainland on November 25 in Shanghai's Xintiandi. It is also the brand's third global flagship, following Paris' Place Vendôme and Tokyo's Ginza.

Located in the historic heart of Xintiandi, the flagship occupies a distinctive shikumen (stone gate) building spanning 278 square meters.

The two-story space follows the design blueprint of the Place Vendôme flagship, using a building steeped in urban memory and historical meaning to convey the maison's core spirit.

Boucheron kicks things off with a whole lot of foliage draped over the façade, plus a gazebo out front, in case you weren't getting the "nature is luxe" memo. There's a second entrance, too, doubling down on the garden theme. This one nods to the classical Chinese garden playbook, complete with a moon gate – the architectural equivalent of a gentle throat-clearing that says: please transition seamlessly into another realm now.

Inside, the nature story keeps going. A commissioned Chinese forest scene anchors the space, populated by lively reishi mushrooms – those long-life, good-health, general-prosperity icons that Shanghai wellness cafés love almost as much as the French jewelry houses do. Boucheron threads its Serpent Bohème and Quatre pieces into the tableau, subtle enough not to break the spell, present enough to remind you what you're here for.

Even more intriguing is the interplay of French and Chinese aesthetics through a blend of green and red. To bring this concept to life, Boucheron invited artist Olga Thune-Larsen to create straw marquetry pieces that give the displays a dazzling visual texture.

Red glass accents reference the deep cultural significance of the color in Asia, while green is the maison's signature hue.

A highlight on the ground floor is the wedding salon, inspired by Shanghai's famed Yuyuan Garden and its flowing waterways. The mosaic tile flooring, meticulously crafted by artist Pierre Mesguich, leads guests into a serene underwater-themed space.

Artist Lin Jiayu continues the essence of Chinese garden aesthetics through a sculptural showcase entirely made of bamboo. Its striking green gradient delivers a powerful visual impact.

Within this setting, Boucheron presents an array of heritage pieces reflecting the maison's long-standing ties to China. Displayed across four showcases and supported by advanced technology, the pieces appear to float lightly in mid-air, exuding poetic charm.

Upstairs, two VIP salons welcome guests with a warm, home-like atmosphere. Exposed beams, original brick walls, and other preserved architectural elements highlight the essence of Shikumen architecture.

Sporty & Rich

The LA-born wellness-meets-wardrobe label that turned leisurely athleisure and aspirational self-care into a global uniform also comes to Shanghai and, has opened its first boutique in China at HKRI Taikoo Hui in Shanghai – marking the brand's deeper strategic expansion in the market.

Founded in 2014 in Los Angeles by former Kith women's creative director and fashion influencer Emily Oberg, Sporty & Rich blends minimal design with vintage aesthetics and athletic energy, promoting a lifestyle defined by wellness and personal freedom.

The name "Sporty" and "Rich" reflects the brand's belief that true richness comes from nurturing one's health. Its core message – Health is Wealth – expresses a vision of an ideal lifestyle that transcends conventional definitions of luxury.

Its signature Tenniscore look – characterized by clean lines, retro colors, and premium fabrics – strikes a balance between athletic energy and understated luxury, earning wide acclaim from global celebrities and tastemakers.

The new boutique incorporates California modernism with French aesthetics, creating a relaxed space that merges timeless taste with wellness-driven values.

To celebrate the opening, Sporty & Rich is debuting its Fall/Winter 2025 "Core" collection along with the "Off Duty" collection.

Back in May 2024, Sporty & Rich launched a limited-time pop-up at Shanghai Jing'an Kerry Center – its first appearance in the Chinese market. In March, it opened its official flagship on the Tmall platform, establishing its first major online retail channel in China.

The store currently lists 179 SKUs, ranging from 199 yuan (US$28) socks to 5,170 yuan jackets. In May, the brand created a "Wellness Club" lifestyle space in Shanghai's Xintiandi, followed by another edition at Zhangyuan in August.

Garcon By Garcon

Garcon By Garcon is a local menswear upstart doing polished, quietly confident basics for guys who want to look put-together without trying too hard, has opened its first brick-and-mortar store at HKRI Taikoo Hui in Shanghai, now in soft-opening.

Founded by Tang Dayun in 2017, Garcon By Garcon has grown steadily over the years and now partners with more than 70 select retailers.

For its first physical store, architect Guo Liaohui was invited to draw inspiration from traditional Chinese architecture. Through the eyes of a contemporary young Easterners, the space reinterprets ancient architectural mythology, shaping an environment that honors Eastern culture – aptly named "Home Sweet Home."

Earthy tones, vibrant splashes of color, aged yet charming furniture, lively patterned drapes, sun-embroidered sofas, and sustainable kite-inspired artworks all come together to create a naturally refreshing sensory experience.

The store offers the full range of Garcon By Garcon men's and women's ready-to-wear, outdoor workwear, and lifestyle products. Whether rooted in realism or romantic imagination, this place feels like home.

Traditional Chinese cultural stories have long served as a major source of inspiration for the brand, expressed through East-meets-West narratives, scroll-like hand-drawn illustrations, mythic storytelling, refined craftsmanship, and distinctive creativity.

Campaigns in recent seasons have been shot in various locations across China – including the "Need Sun" series celebrating sun-worship culture in Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture.

Holoholo

Holohol is a young lifestyle brand built around original, hyper-cute drinkware for people who treat their water bottles like extensions of their personality. They planted their first Shanghai flag on October 1, arriving with the confidence of a brand that knows exactly who it's talking to: young people who take their drinkware – and their personalities – very seriously. The pitch is simple enough: original cup designs that try to blend quality with individuality, plus a dose of playfulness to keep everything feeling light.

They've got cups for every mood and micro-moment: the "life-saving" coffee vessel that keeps you vertical through another office day, the tiny adventure cup you clip to your bag to signal you're an Outdoors Person now. Each piece leans hard into a tidy design philosophy – clean, cute, functional and eager to telegraph that you're living well, or at least trying.

The store's big interactive hook is a DIY zone where you can assemble your own cup on the spot, swapping in little decorative "cup flowers" like you're accessorizing a pet rock. It's fun, harmless, and extremely on-brand for a city that loves customizing anything that will sit still long enough.

And with its blast of dopamine colors and hands-on tinkering, Holoholo somehow turns drinking water – arguably the least glamorous human task – into a small, cheerful ritual.

Maison by M Stand

For anyone who hasn't been keeping score in Shanghai's caffeine wars, M Stand is the homegrown coffee chain that went from zero to everywhere in just a few years.

It built its following with a sharp, black-on-black industrial look, sugary signature drinks, and a vibe that lands somewhere between boutique coffee shop and lifestyle brand. In a city already overflowing with cafés, M Stand managed to carve out a lane by making every store feel like a set piece – and by giving people drinks that photograph extremely well.

Now they've taken the next logical step: a concept space. Maison by M Stand has appeared on Changle Road, keeping the brand's familiar noir-industrial aesthetic but layering it onto a preserved historical building. The result is a kind of warm, textured hybrid – black counters, black backdrop walls, black furnishings, all softened by the bones of the original structure.

The layout breaks into distinct zones: an ordering-and-prep area, a bean retail and tasting corner (for people who like to sniff their coffee before they commit), a sit-down dining space, and a cultural-and-creative section because it's 2025 and every café needs one. Outside, there's room for eight to ten tables – enough for a steady rotation of people taking photos in different lighting scenarios.

The big swing here is the "coffee by day, cocktails by night" pivot. After sunset, the space shifts into a bar slinging specialty drinks like a green-mango rum cocktail, expanding its usefulness from morning caffeine refueling to evening socializing. It's a smart play for a brand that already traffics heavily in lifestyle, giving its fans one more reason to stick around after the last iced latte is gone.
