China Reigns at International Mathematical Olympiad in Shanghai

China claimed the first-place laurels at the 67th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO 2026), securing the top spot in the overall team standings as all six of its contestants won gold medals, three of whom achieved perfect scores.

From July 9, IMO 2026 gathered young mathematical elites from over 120 countries and regions in Shanghai to compete professionally and exchange ideas.

Apart from the high-intensity mathematical competitions, participants also took part in cultural exchange activities, experiencing the urban charm of Shanghai and the profound cultural heritage of China.

The grand closing ceremony of the world's premier mathematics competition was held today at the auditorium of Shanghai High School.

Deng Leyan, Liu Che and Zhang Bolun from the Chinese team were among the seven competitors who attained perfect full scores in the competition.

Deng, a second-year student at Shanghai High School, won a perfect-score IMO gold medal for a second straight year.

According to the official results, IMO 2026 presented a total of 55 gold medals, 105 silver medals and 189 bronze medals, with an additional 141 contestants earning Honorable Mentions.

China took first place in the team rankings with a total score of 232 points. The United States was second with 207 points while Russia (196) and Singapore (169) ranked third and fourth, respectively.

In his address, Liu Ruochuan, vice chairman of the council of the Chinese Mathematical Society and a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, encouraged the young talent to break free from the obsession with competition results, maintain eternal curiosity and perseverance in mathematical exploration, cherish the precious friendship built during the event, and advance steadily on the journey of mathematical research and study.

Hungary will serve as the host country for the next edition of the IMO in 2027.

In his closing remarks, Gregor Dolinar, president of the IMO Board, spoke highly of the meticulous organization and outstanding outcomes of IMO 2026. He extended heartfelt recognition and gratitude to all contestants, organizing staff, volunteers and all supporting parties, while officially announcing the full conclusion of the 67th International Mathematical Olympiad.
