The Art of Reinvention: a Creative Journey Rooted in Shanghai
Carmen Lee is a Hong Kong-born, Canada-educated creative who has lived in Shanghai for over two decades. Before switching to interior design, she studied architecture. Her career includes commercial and residential spaces, painting and joint exhibitions rooted in traditional Chinese craft. She experiments, reinvents and finds inspiration in every medium at her studio, Create Carmen Lee.
Before we discuss your studio, Create Carmen Lee, could you please introduce yourself?
I'm Carmen Lee. I was born in Hong Kong, educated in Canada, and have been living in Shanghai for over two decades. My career began in international design studios, where I pivoted my practice from architecture to interior design, specializing in both commercial and residential projects. Beyond my interior design work, I also paint and collaborate with other local artists and designers on various exhibitions, exploring traditional Chinese crafts.
Some projects I created in close partnership with shop owners include the Subconscious Day Spa, FRAW, a unique women's retail store, and the Apple Picker, a tea and biscuit shop. My studio, Create Carmen Lee, is about my creative journey – a practice dedicated to inspiration, creation and perpetual reinvention across many disciplines.
After living in Shanghai for a few years, why did you decide to launch your company here?
It wasn't a conscious career move but an instinctual one. While I was working at the international studio, I discovered that I don't thrive with limited boundaries and have a natural tendency to challenge standard practices.
What makes Shanghai's business environment so remarkable?
Because of its spirit of sharing and mutual support. I'm amazed that I can ask for support or a reference in a WeChat moment or group, and people that I've met will respond. While I'm not a complete fan of social media, I can see it can serve as a powerful tool for our community.
What were you trying to bring to the local community?
I am trying to make the local community stronger by sharing my resources and experiences. I think we are all trying to support each other.
What are the biggest challenges setting up a business here? How do you stay motivated?
The beginning was very difficult. Finding the right people and building a strong relationship takes time. The right people with positive attitudes and mindsets help me to stay motivated.
What was the moment that made you most proud?
I see each place that I designed as the foundation for relationship development, whether it is a shop or a home. Interior design is about creating the atmosphere where relationships can deepen and evolve.
What are you working on?
I'm currently working on a residential project and a few restaurants. For my art projects, I am working on a new collection of art pieces to be installed in the Subconscious Day Spa. Also, I am in discussion with a few cafe owners to showcase my artwork.
Who is the female role model who inspires you?
I met a woman who is in her late 60s. She has shared her life experience with me, how she grew and managed herself in different phases of her life, both her professional and personal life. She is a cool, strong and supportive woman.
Do you have any advice for women entrepreneurs?
Looking back, difficulties seem relatively small once you learn how to manage your thoughts and emotions. It is just a matter of perspective. Keep reflecting. I think women have a strong capacity for adaptability, personal growth and spirituality. There is no such thing as failure. You just evolve into something else. And you don't have to have your own business to call yourself an entrepreneur. It is just a mindset.
