Good News: Metro Line 2 Extends West Ahead of CIIE
Shanghai Metro's Line 2, which connects the city's two airports, Pudong and Hongqiao, is about to get longer.
The new Panxiang Road · Shanghai National Accounting Institute Station has passed its final safety inspection and is set to open before the 8th China International Import Expo (CIIE) opens on November 5.
The westward extension will help ease passenger congestion during the expo and provide smoother metro access to suburban Qingpu District and the West Hongqiao area.
During a recent CIIE emergency response drill, Yang Jun, head of the safety and emergency group of the event's traffic command center, explained: "In case of heavy passenger flow, Line 2 trains could temporarily skip the National Exhibition and Convention Center (NECC) Station and direct passengers to Panxiang Road Station, from where they can walk or take shuttle buses to the venue."
The new section stretches 1.67 kilometers from the NECC Station, the stop for the main venue of the CIIE, westward along East Xumin Road to Panxiang Road in Qingpu.
As the only metro line linking Qingpu directly with downtown Shanghai, Line 2's extension will make travel to the city center faster and more convenient for suburban residents.
