'Prince of Love Ballads' highlights Chinese pop music

Dubbed as the “Prince of Love Ballads,” Chang Shin-che, also known as Jeff Chang, is to grace Shanghai with his presence.

For countless music fans, from the Baby Boom Generation to the millennials, Chang is an inimitable idol.

The chanteur’s emotional and melodious songs capture all facets of life, evoking endless nostalgia for listeners.

Since 1989, the 52-year-old artist has released a string of highly successful albums. He is one of the highest-selling artists in China, with more than 30 albums that have sold in their millions across South and East Asia during a three-decade music career.

The veteran singer enjoys equal popularity with the “Four Heavenly Kings,” namely Jacky Cheung, Andy Lau, Aaron Kwok and Leon Lai, who dominated the Canto-pop markets during the 1990s.

Asked to describe what music means to him, Chang said: “Music gives me the joy of life. It is not work or something to be used to reach certain career goals. In music, I am most comfortable.”

The artist wants to “open the gate” between East and West with his pop music and hopes the West will like Chinese pop music as much as K-pop.

“I think there are more parts that we can share with the world — Chinese culture, and also Chinese pop music,” he said.

After Shanghai, Chang will visit Shenyang and Wuxi, and prepare for a one-off show at London’s Royal Albert Hall in the United Kindom in April.
