Chinese Community's 'Roof Rain' Cooling System Goes Viral Worldwide
A residential community in northern China has captured global attention for an unusual approach to beating the summer heat: a rooftop misting system that lowers ground temperatures by up to 12 degrees Celsius.
The "roof rain" system at the Xijian Tianmao Guobinfu community in Yuncheng, Shanxi province, uses high-pressure atomization to spray a fine mist from 200 nozzles atop each of the eight residential buildings. The mist cools the air through evaporative cooling, reducing ambient temperatures by 5 to 8 degrees Celsius, according to property manager Jia Wen, reported China National Radio over the weekend.
The system, which runs for about 10 minutes at a time during hot periods, has been operational since August 2024. Shanxi has been baking under a heat wave, with temperatures in Yuncheng and neighboring Linfen reaching 37°C.
The cooling method has drawn international notice. On July 1, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning shared a video of the system on social media, where it quickly went viral. Earlier, French media highlighted the same technology while covering Europe's own heat wave, describing it as a highly efficient outdoor cooling spray.
Residents have praised the system not only for its cooling effect but also for the rainbows that occasionally appear in the mist. The community has become a local attraction, drawing visitors from across the region who come to experience the 12-degree ground-level temperature drop firsthand.
