Four separate warnings as rollercoaster weather hits Shanghai
The skies over Shanghai turned dramatic on Thursday, and not in a way anyone would wish for.
By mid-afternoon, four separate weather warnings – high temperature, lightning, rainstorm and gale – had all been issued in quick succession, prompting a citywide emergency response.
At 12:15pm, the high temperature warning was raised to orange – second highest in a four-tier system – as downtown districts braced for temperatures soaring past 37 degrees Celsius.
Just over half an hour later, at 12:50pm, a yellow lightning warning – medium in a three-tier system – was added to the mix.
Lightning is expected across much of the city over the next 12 hours, with risks of power outages, fallen trees and other safety concerns.
The unstable atmosphere is fueled by Shanghai's position along the edge of a subtropical high, a pattern that favors the development of intense convective weather systems.
By 1:25pm, the situation escalated further. Meteorologists issued both a blue rainstorm warning and a blue gale warning, both lowest in a four-color system, predicting localized downpours exceeding 35 millimeters in an hour and gusts of wind reaching up to Level 9.
The forecast paints a picture of fast-moving storm cells, and the city's drainage systems have been beefed up to prevent urban flooding, especially in low-lying or flood-prone neighborhoods.
Real-time reports show the storm has already made landfall in Gaodong Town in the Pudong New Area, where rainfall exceeded 40mm, with thunderclouds developing over Baoshan, Changxing Island, Songjiang, and other areas. The fierce combination of elements has led the city's flood control and typhoon headquarters to activate a Level IV emergency response, calling for citywide vigilance.
Meteorologists caution that the worst may not be over yet. The storm clouds are still evolving and moving eastward, especially affecting the northeast of Pudong and suburban areas where Songjiang District borders Fengxian District.
Residents are urged to stay indoors when possible, secure loose objects outdoors, and keep track of the latest updates.
Looking ahead to Friday, a shift in wind patterns from the southeast and east may bring slight relief. While intermittent showers and sunshine will continue to alternate, the intensity of the heat may ease slightly, with daytime highs expected around 33-34 degrees.
