Malaysian Police Probe Officer Over Viral Video Mocking Chinese During Trip

Malaysian police have launched a disciplinary investigation into a female officer accused of making derogatory remarks about Chinese people while traveling in China, following a viral social media video that sparked widespread criticism.

Malaysia's Inspector-General of Police, Mohd Khalid Ismail, said yesterday that the officer is being investigated for possible breaches of police discipline as well as potential legal violations, according to Malaysian media outlet Malay Mail.

"We have opened a disciplinary investigation into the officer concerned. If any violations of the law are established, appropriate action will also be taken," Mohd Khalid was quoted as saying.

He said the officer remains on active duty pending the outcome of the investigation and reminded all police personnel to uphold professional standards and proper conduct at all times, whether in Malaysia or abroad.

The controversy began after a video posted on TikTok showed a Malaysian tourist, Nur Asyiqin Mohd Dalil, covering her nose and making remarks implying that people in China were "smelly" and "didn't shower." The clip quickly circulated online, drawing backlash from both Chinese and Malaysian netizens, many of whom condemned the comments as offensive and disrespectful.

According to Malaysian media reports, the policewoman recorded the video while vacationing in China. Social media users also accused members of her travel group of behaving rudely toward local residents, including pushing passengers while boarding a bus and openly criticizing a taxi driver.

As criticism mounted, Nur Asyiqin issued a public apology on social media, acknowledging that her behavior had been inappropriate and expressing regret for the incident.

She said the remarks were made in a moment of poor judgment and stressed that she had no intention of insulting anyone or creating tensions between the two countries.
