Tencent Launches 24-Hour TV Channel Designed for Pets
A pet-focused video channel has been launched by Tencent, marking one of the first dedicated content offerings for animals on a video platform in China.
The channel, known as "Pet TV," provides a 24-hour stream of content tailored for cats and dogs, including programming from international libraries such as DogTV. The feature is currently available free to VIP members during a limited trial period.
According to Tencent, the service is designed around "pets' alone time," aiming to offer emotional companionship and support behavioral stability when owners are away.
Platform data cited by Tencent shows that more than 60 percent of dog owners leave the television on for their pets before going out, while nearly 70 percent view co-watching as an important form of interaction. Internal testing also found that over 85 percent of users reported their dogs appeared calmer after watching such content, with reduced separation anxiety and destructive behavior.
The launch has also sparked discussion about whether pets truly engage with screen-based media. Researchers note that while animals can respond to audiovisual stimuli, their perception differs significantly from that of humans. Tencent said the channel's content has been adapted to match pets' physiological characteristics.
Cats and dogs have more limited color perception and heightened sensitivity to motion. Cats, in particular, require much higher frame rates than standard television to perceive smooth movement.
Hearing differences further shape their experience, as both species can detect higher-frequency sounds.
Content preferences also vary. Cats tend to respond to fast-moving, prey-like visuals such as birds or fish, while dogs are more receptive to slower, calming scenes, including natural landscapes or interactions with other animals.
Industry observers, according to Jiupai News, say the move reflects broader pressures on video platforms. With user growth slowing, companies are exploring new ways to boost engagement. Pet-focused programming, seen as relatively low-cost and suitable for extended playback, may help increase user activity and viewing time by tapping into the expanding pet-owning population.
Some experts caution that while tailored content may help reduce boredom or anxiety in pets, responses can vary, and owners should monitor their animals' reactions when introducing such media.
