Decade-Old Romance Pays Off as Xi'an Couple Redeems 'Love Insurance'
A decade after a college impulse purchase, a couple in Xi'an, northwest China's Shaanxi Province, has gone viral for redeeming a long-forgotten "love insurance" policy, cashing in 10,000 yuan (US$1,400) after finally tying the knot.
Back in 2016, Wu bought a 199-yuan "love insurance" policy online as a gift for her then-boyfriend, Wang, while the two were university students. The novelty policy promised a payout of either 10,000 roses or 10,000 yuan if the couple eventually married.
Wu told Jimu News that she didn't tell her boyfriend at the time. "He thought I'd been scammed," she said.
The pair's relationship began in high school and continued through college. In October 2025, after 10 years together, they officially registered their marriage. Only then did they remember the policy and decide to see if it could still be redeemed.
Rather than requesting the roses, the couple opted for the cash payout. "The wedding was already over, and I honestly don't know how we'd handle 10,000 roses," Wu said. "We haven't decided exactly how to spend the money yet, but it will go toward something meaningful."
China Life Property & Casualty Insurance, which issued the policy, confirmed to Jimu News that the product was launched in 2015 and discontinued in 2017. However, the insurer said all previously sold policies remain valid and can be redeemed as long as the conditions are met.
