Shanghai is very likely to enter winter this Friday and welcome the season's first snow over the weekend, forecasters said.

According to the local weather bureau, under the combined influence of a cold front and warm south-westerly moisture, there will be sleet across most of the city between Friday night and Sunday morning.

The city's western parts, including Jiading, Qingpu, Jinshan and Songjiang districts, will be the most likely areas to see snow, largely from Saturday night to Sunday morning, with expected snowfall of 3 to 5 millimeters. Snow cover of 1 to 2 centimeters is also expected in some areas.

The ground temperature is still high enough for the snow to melt, though, so it is unlikely the streets will be icy.

The lowest temperature in the downtown area will drop to 3 degrees Celsius, while the low in suburban areas will be 0 to 2.

Skies will turn overcast and rainy again starting Sunday noon and temperatures will rise. Monday will be another rainy day.
