2025-08-01 to 2025-08-31August has arrived and the Shanghai International Dance Center Theater is bringing a slew of dazzling dance performances to treat local fans of various dance styles.
'Glory: Chinese Ballet Stars Gala'
Having achieved resounding success in 2024, the gala returns this year with an even more stellar lineup. For the first time, top Chinese ballet artists on the world stage – from leading companies in Norway, the United Kingdom, the United States, Germany, Switzerland and the Netherlands – will reunite at home and present 10-plus stunning classical and contemporary excerpts.

'Odes To Heroes'
The production is based on the traditional Chinese Yingge Dance ("dance to the hero's song"), a folk dance that merges opera, dance and martial arts. Set in the late 1930s, the story follows a family where the father departs for Southeast Asia, leaving his wife to raise their son alone. On Lantern Festival, the boy strikes his father's Yingge sticks and is transported into a dreamlike realm.

'Behind The City'
The three-act physical theater production draws from the eponymous short story collection of Liu Yiqing from the Southern Song Dynasty (1127-1279).
