Belarusian Drama 'Evening' Returns to Shanghai
The Republican Theater of Belarusian Drama has returned to Shanghai with "Evening," bringing the original cast back to revive a fable about time and life.
Adapted from the classic work by Belarusian playwright Alexei Dudarev, the play is set in a forgotten village on the edge of Belarus, where time seems to have stood still. Only three elderly inhabitants remain, together with a well and a birch grove.
As survivors of the Great Patriotic War, they have become the last guardians of this land. In a world that has almost ceased to move, they wait day after day – waiting for letters, for visitors, and for their own twilight.
The live cinematography woven throughout the performance opens a crack in the characters' isolation. The stage, built with cardboard silhouettes of the village – a dry well, fences, and trees – resembles an open pop-up storybook.
The play had its Chinese premiere last year at the China Shanghai International Arts Festival, captivating audiences with its restrained yet deeply moving expression. Performed in Belarusian, it is accompanied by Chinese and English subtitles.
