Mariinsky And VPO Among World-Class Orchestras To Perform At Oriental Art Center
The autumn classical music feast at the Shanghai Oriental Art Center officially began with the Asian debut of the Rachmaninoff International Symphony Orchestra under Russian master Mikhail Pletnev this week.
The venue will host several of the world's leading orchestras in the coming months.
The Mariinsky Orchestra, led by Valery Gergiev, will perform Mahler symphonies from October 12 to 16.
The performances will set a record for Mahler symphony events in Asia, featuring six concerts that encompass nine symphonies. The longest concert will last 170 minutes, contributing to a total performance duration of 12 hours.
It is also unusual to see a symphony orchestra and choir combination of 200 and 300 members. Tickets for the Symphony No. 8 on October 15 sold out in record time, a testament to the refined taste of Shanghai's music lovers.
Gergiev previously completed a tour featuring the complete Mahler symphonies with the London Symphony Orchestra. While Mahler was a German-Austrian composer, the emotional intensity and narrative depth of his music reflect the essence of Russian musical tradition.
November promises to be an exciting month for classical music enthusiasts in Shanghai. On November 4 and 5, the Staatskapelle Dresden will grace the stage at the Oriental Art Center for their sixth appearance there. Conducted by Daniele Gatti, they will join forces with Chinese pianist Bruce Liu to showcase two sets of cross-style works.
The Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, led by conductor Christian Thielemann, will perform masterpieces by Schumann, Brahms, and Bruckner on November 22 and 23.
For the third straight year, Theodore Currentzis and MusicAeterna will perform in Shanghai on November 26 and 27. The programs include Wagner's "Ring without Words." MusicAeterna will also be celebrating its 20th anniversary this year.
Other noteworthy concerts include Denis Matsuev's piano recital on November 13 and the performances by the NDR Elbphilharmonic Orchestra on October 28 and 29.
