Minimalist Dance Classic From 1979 Comes to Shanghai
A landmark of contemporary dance is coming to Shanghai as the Lyon Opera Ballet presents "Dance," the influential work by American choreographer Lucinda Childs, at Shangyin Opera House from October 14 to 16.
Premiered in 1979, the production brings together choreography by Childs, music by renowned composer Philip Glass and visual designs by conceptual artist Sol LeWitt.
Rather than following a traditional storyline, "Dance" explores the beauty of movement through repetition and geometric patterns. Performers walk, turn, leap and move across the stage in carefully structured sequences, creating an ever-changing relationship between rhythm and space.
Glass' minimalist score accompanies the dancers, while LeWitt's projected imagery adds another visual dimension, blending live performance with film and geometric compositions.
Nearly five decades after its premiere, the production remains an influential work in modern dance. France's Lyon Opera Ballet revived the production in 2016 under Childs' supervision, introducing the work to a new generation of audiences.
The Shanghai performances are part of the 25th China Shanghai International Arts Festival and the Dance Reflections by Van Cleef & Arpels program.
