China Retrieves Orbital Class Rocket in Sea-Based First

China successfully tested an experimental ‌rocket retrieval system using a net attached to a sea platform, aiming to break US dominance in reusable rockets, state broadcaster CCTV reported. A Long March 10B rocket lifted off from the Hainan commercial space launch site in southern China, on Friday, with the booster and upper stage separating six minutes later. The booster fell down into the net, becoming the first in history recovered by that method. China is now the second country after the US to demonstrate a full engineering pipeline for large-payload reusable rockets. The Long March 10B can carry at least 16 tons into low-Earth orbit. Shares in Chinese aerospace firms rose on the news.

Benchmark Brent crude closed at US$76 a barrel in New York.

Israel shared intelligence with the US that it claims shows Iran was devising a recent plot to assassinate President Donald Trump, CNN reported. Iran has threatened to kill Trump as far back as 2020, when a drone strike he ordered killed top Iranian general, Qasem Soleimani. Anti-Trump fervor in Iran was stirred this week by the burial of former supreme leader Ali Khamenei and family members killed by Israeli and US attacks on the first day of the war. Trump brushed off the threats this week, saying, "I'm on every single one of their lists. These are evil, sick people, and we have to root out that cancer."

Burnham, who comes from the left-wing of the party, is expected to become the latest occupant of 10 Downing Street on July 20.

China's Tencent is in talks to become the largest shareholder in Manus, the Chinese AI agent developer whose US$2 billion acquisition earlier this year by US-based Meta was unwound by Beijing authorities, the Financial Times and Reuters reported. Tencent and other early investors are seeking to buy back Manus for about the same price as Meta paid. Chinese authorities in April ordered Meta to unwind the purchase amid concerns about key technology falling into the hands of foreign ownership. Extreme summer temperatures have pushed grids in regions like Guangdong and Shaanxi provinces to historic peaks more than 20 times this summer.

The surge is driven by growth in industrial power use, particularly in emerging sectors like electric vehicles, energy storage and AI data centers; a 40 percent demand spike in internet data and electric-vehicle charging services; and rising use of business and home air conditioning, which accounts for up to 40 percent of the peak power load in several provinces.

China Approves Shein's Planned Hong Kong IPO

Chinese regulators approved a planned Hong Kong initial public offering by global fast-fashion e-commerce giant Shein, which wants to issue up to 34 million shares.

Shein was founded in China but has moved its headquarters to Singapore. In the past year, it has run afoul of European regulators for alleged business malpractices. Shein hasn't priced shares for its Hong Kong listing, but Bloomberg News reported it may seek up to HK$7.8 billion (US$1 billion).
