Apple has officially updated its Chinese storefront with the new iPhone 17e, a mid-generational refresh that targets users less sensitive to camera and battery features with a more accessible price point.

Apple's China website has launched the new iPhone 17e, starting at 4,499 yuan (US$643) with 256GB storage. Pre-orders begin on March 4, with sales starting on March 11.

The iPhone 17e features the same A19 chip as the entire iPhone 17 lineup. It starts with 256GB of storage at 4,499 yuan, doubling the base storage capacity of its predecessor at the same price point. However, analysts suggest it targets users who are less sensitive to camera specifications and battery life.

According to research firm IDC, the iPhone 17e's competitiveness remains low, with the design still relying on outdated molds. The most significant upgrade is the chip. However, shortcomings in imaging and display persist, making its product strength inferior to the slightly pricier 17 and Air models, as well as domestically produced flagship devices in the same price range.

IDC data projects Apple's 2025 sales in China at 46 million units, with the iPhone 16e series, the previous iteration of iPhone17e, accounting for less than 1 percent of total sales.

Chinese consumers care about camera and battery features as they spend more time on the phone for social media and games.

The 17e launch is part of a broader push. On Wednesday evening, Apple will host simultaneous product launches in three global hubs, including Shanghai, where additional hardware is expected to be unveiled.
