Shanghai opens first highway EV supercharging station
Shanghai unveiled its first highway supercharging station on Sept 28 at the Fengjing service area along the G60 Shanghai–Kunming Expressway, just ahead of the National Day holiday.
Marking a milestone in the city's push for low-carbon transportation, the facility is designed to deliver greater efficiency, convenience, and an enhanced charging experience for new energy vehicle owners during peak travel seasons.
The station can simultaneously supercharge 16 NEVs, supplementing the existing 28 charging piles and significantly boosting the service area's charging capacity.
Equipped with ultra-fast chargers capable of delivering up to 640 kilowatts, the new system can increase charging efficiency more than fivefold compared with conventional facilities—cutting recharging times for a 200-kilometer range from over half an hour to just a few minutes.
"During holidays over the past two years, the average number of charges and the total electricity consumed at the Fengjing service area surpassed 1,000 vehicles per day—about 10 times the regular level," said Wang Lihui, head of marketing at State Grid Shanghai Jinshan.
Wang added that launching the supercharging station before the National Day and Mid-Autumn Festival rush is intended to meet the expected surge in demand and ensure safer, smoother journeys for electric vehicle users.
