Shanghai Railway Station began a major renovation project of its south entrance on Nov 11, aiming to enhance passenger services and boost check-in and security capacity by 70 percent.

Scheduled for completion by the end of January 2026, the project will upgrade facilities for ticketing, transfers, lost and found, and security screening, creating a more efficient and comfortable travel experience.

The renovation includes the addition of covered walkways across the south square, offering protection from rain and sun for passengers transferring between different forms of transportation.

A new lost property retrieval point will be established on the west side of the south entrance, allowing passengers to reclaim their belongings without reentering the secure zone.

On the east side, the self-service ticket area will add seven multi-functional service windows to facilitate ticket purchases, refunds, and changes.

Meanwhile, the covered walkways will connect Shanghai Metro Line 1 Exit 1, the taxi stand, and the southwest and southeast exits.

Convenient transfer channels within the station will also be expanded and upgraded.

To minimize disruptions during construction, a temporary entrance has been established on the west side of the original south entrance, maintaining the existing number of security channels.

The station has also increased staff members and volunteer presence to provide guidance and assistance.

Passengers should anticipate an additional five to 10 minutes of walking time to reach the temporary entrance.

The self-service ticket area on the east side of the south entrance is temporarily closed, requiring passengers to use the Lianhe Ticketing Building.

Passengers can also enter through the north entrance, which was expanded earlier this year to increase security channels from five to eight.
