China kicked off a new round of "Shopping in China" campaign on Saturday in Shanghai as consumption is expected to continue to serve as a main driver of the economy.

"The campaign is a practical measure to boost consumption, and it will focus on three themes this year, namely, consumption of products, consumption of services and creation of consumption scenes," said China's Commerce Minister Wang Wentao at the launching ceremony.

The "Shopping in China" campaign was initiated last year and has facilitated China's consumption to account for 53.5 percent of China's economic growth in the first nine months of 2025, a jump of 9 percentage points from the previous year, according to the commerce ministry.

At the launching ceremony, city mayors of Shanghai, Hangzhou, Wuhan and Shenzhen introduced their respective measures to bolster people's consumption for the Chinese Lunar New Year season, promising new products and better services.

Shanghai will issue new shopping coupons for people living in or travelling to Shanghai, and will try to improve shopping experiences with better food, more innovative products and longer shopping hours. In particular, foreigners are encouraged to spend as gifts will be offered for inbound consumption, said Shanghai Mayor Gong Zheng.
