Global Youth Forum To Fuel Tech Innovation
Shanghai will host the 7th Y50 Innovation and Entrepreneurship Forum on Sunday to attract global talent and boost the city's technology development.
Over 200 technology projects and 150 investment firms will attend. To support AI, biomedicine, and integrated circuit startups, organizers will launch a seed plan with a 500 million yuan (US$73.4 million) equity fund and 5 billion yuan in credit.
"Opportunities to understand policies and communicate directly at the forum are precious," said Ru Binxin, a technology entrepreneur attending the event. "We expect Shanghai to create more growth stages for young people."
Shanghai launched the Y50 Forum in 2020. The annual event carries the theme "Youth and Cities Grow Together." It serves as a platform to connect young business leaders with government resources, capital, and industry networks. The forum aims to build a strong innovation ecosystem and make Shanghai a top destination for global youth.
The forum expands its global reach this year to connect overseas researchers with Shanghai's startup environment. Organizers will hold simultaneous sessions at Stanford University, the National University of Singapore, and the University of Hong Kong.
The event also adds a special roadshow track to help international entrepreneurs enter the local market.
The forum highlights a growing number of overseas talent and young scientists finding success in Shanghai. Ru represents the new wave of innovators.
Ru founded Sailyond Technology in China in 2022 after graduating from Oxford University and working at Google X. His company develops AI quality inspection equipment for manufacturing.
The standardized machines cut factory inspection changeover time from several hours to 55 seconds. Within three years, the company became profitable and sold nearly 400 devices worldwide with a 30 percent rate of customer repurchase.
In late 2020, Huang Chongji sold his American property and gave up his plans to apply for a green card to return to China. He founded Aspiring Semiconductor to develop high-end IC inspection equipment. His company uses optical testing to solve supply chain bottlenecks.
The forum honors renewable energy pioneers. Jiang Peng founded Honghu Fusion in late 2023 to develop commercial controlled nuclear fusion. His startup uses stellarator technology for safe, stable fusion energy. Honghu Fusion received 100 million yuan in seed funding for its first experimental device.
"Our goal is not simple domestic substitution," Ru said. "We want to achieve real domestic transcendence."
