A simple handwritten note taped to a dormitory door has moved thousands online, revealing a quiet tradition of compassion that unfolded for years at a Chinese university, People's Daily reported yesterday.

"Thank you all for your continued kindness. I am about to graduate and leave the school. Please no longer leave water bottles at my door. Wishing everyone a bright future," read the notice posted by a master's graduate at Yangtze University in Hubei Province.

The student, who has a congenital bone condition that limits his mobility, had been housed in a ground-floor dormitory by the university to accommodate his needs. Over the years, classmates quietly left empty plastic bottles outside his room so he could collect and sell them for extra income — a small but sustained act of solidarity that continued throughout his studies.

The tradition came to light when a fellow student, who had gone to leave bottles as usual, saw the farewell note and shared a photo online. "We just wanted to help. He's been so inspiring," the student wrote.

The post quickly went viral, with many sharing their own stories of campus kindness.

One graduate recalled requesting the recipe for a favorite cafeteria dish before leaving, and receiving a detailed document from a canteen staffer. Another told of a dormitory auntie who made dumplings for departing students. In a particularly touching exchange, a medical student who had eaten at the same restaurant for seven years invited the owners to their graduation photo, and they showed up.
