The cast and crew of "Luiza's Desert," a main competition entry making its world premiere at the 28th Shanghai International Film Festival, met with media on June 17 to discuss the film's themes and production.

The Brazil-UK co-production follows Luiza, a 15-year-old in Rio de Janeiro navigating a turbulent stretch of adolescence as she contends with her mother's schizophrenia, her own emerging artistic ambitions and her first experience of love.

As the story unfolds, she moves past a lingering fear of inheriting her mother's condition and gradually learns to accept uncertainty while forging her own path.

Director Alan Minas said the "desert" of the title is deeply metaphorical and sits at the center of the film's meaning. Far from the usual image of a barren, desolate landscape, it stands in for the way Luiza's mother experiences the world. It can read as her anguish as she slips into illness, or as a refuge – a parallel inner world where she holds her condition and her survival in balance.

Anchoring that interior world to reality is Luiza herself, played by Nina Prado. Prado said she was moved by the character's determination to rebuild her family's former happiness through sheer will.

"Her family life is full of difficulties, and that's a huge hurdle," she said. "On top of that, like any teenager, she's dealing with friendships and conflicts at school – and that's just as hard to navigate."

Producer Daniela Vitorino said Luiza's resilience in the face of overwhelming hardship is exactly what she hopes audiences take away.

"I hope people draw something from her story," she said. "However many difficulties and conflicts there are, things get better in the end. Life always holds hope."
