Man Robbed of HK$7M in Gold at Hong Kong Airport
Hong Kong police are hunting three masked men after a 36-year-old man was attacked with knives and robbed of about 6 kilograms of gold worth around HK$7 million (US$890,000) at Hong Kong International Airport early on Thursday.
The robbery happened at about 12:30am in Car Park 3 at the airport, according to Hong Kong media reports citing police. The victim, surnamed Wu, had returned to Hong Kong from Bali and was carrying a black backpack containing the gold when he was ambushed.
Police said several masked men wearing different clothing got out of a seven-seater vehicle and chased the victim through the car park. He tried to flee but was caught between parking spaces and slashed on his left thigh and left forearm. The attackers then snatched the backpack and fled toward Tung Chung in the vehicle.
Emergency workers found the victim bleeding from injuries to his hands and legs. He was sent to hospital for treatment.
Local reports said Wu had earlier traveled to Bali at the instruction of a former employer and obtained the gold from an Indonesian man before returning to Hong Kong. Police have not publicly confirmed the full background of the gold transfer.
Officers cordoned off part of the first floor of the car park, where bloodstains and other traces were found. A white electric private car suspected to be connected to the case was also examined at the scene, according to reports.
No arrests had been made as of Thursday afternoon. The three suspects are believed to be aged between 20 and 30.
The case comes after several high-value gold thefts in Hong Kong in recent months, including a March case in Hung Hom in which 73 kilograms of gold bars worth about HK$93 million were stolen and later recovered. Police have not indicated that the airport robbery is connected to any earlier case.
