Asia’s first dungeon project started construction in Shanghai today. The entertainment attraction is Merlin Entertainments Group’s fourth project in the city after Madame Tussauds Shanghai, Changfeng Ocean World and LEGOLAND Discovery Center.

Located in the Mosaic Shanghai shopping mall on Nanjing Road Pedestrian Mall, the Shanghai Dungeon will open to the public in autumn this year.

According to the group, visitors will be offered a 90-minute immersive adventure of scary fun. The sets will feature distinctive Shanghai elements. The city’s scary stories and lost legends will be included in the script.

Benjamin Sweet, an official with the Merlin group, said the attraction will be a combination of themed sets, live acts and cutting-edge technology to take visitors on a journey back in time where they can hear, smell, see and experience something of old Shanghai.

“We are very optimistic about the prospect of the tourism market in China,” Sweet added.

In the attraction’s 10 themed zones, visitors can interact with Dungeon natives played by professional comedians.

The Shanghai Dungeon is the 10th Dungeon location in the world since the brand’s launch in 1974 in London. Dungeons have also been launched in Amsterdam, Berlin, Edinburgh, Hamburg and San Francisco.
