Newborn's Finger Severed in C-Section; Midwife Suspended
A midwife has been suspended following a surgical error that resulted in a newborn suffering a partial amputation of a finger during a cesarean section at a county hospital in east China's Jiangsu Province, local health authorities announced yesterday.
The incident occurred on December 25, 2025, at Xuyi County People's Hospital in Huaian. According to a statement from the Xuyi County Health Commission, the infant's left middle finger was partially severed due to what was described as "a serious operational error" by the attending midwife.
Hospital staff immediately arranged for the newborn's transfer to a specialized provincial hospital, where the infant successfully underwent reconstructive surgery.
Officials confirmed that the baby has now been discharged and is continuing rehabilitation at home. The involved midwife has been suspended.
In its statement, the hospital extended its "sincere apologies" to the family and pledged to assume full responsibility for all ongoing treatment and recovery costs related to the injury.
The infant's father told the Elephant News today that the family had reached an agreement with the hospital. "Our child is doing okay now," he said. "The initial treatment is over, but we will need to observe the long-term function and development of the finger."
