Popular White Tiger 'Xiao Nao' Killed in Enclosure Fight After Zookeeper Mistake
A popular white tiger known as "Xiao Nao" has died following a fight with another tiger after zookeepers mistakenly placed them together in the same enclosure, officials said today.
The 10-year-old tiger, a popular attraction at Qingdao Zoo, suffered fatal injuries during the confrontation on the morning of May 31.
"Two white tigers engaged in a physical altercation," a zoo staff member told Modern Express Daily. "One of them unfortunately died."
The zoo confirmed the deceased tiger was Xiao Nao, who had gained a national following online for her striking appearance.
In a statement released on June 4, the Qingdao Park Management Center said a preliminary investigation found that a keeper had violated safety protocols by releasing both tigers into the same outdoor exhibit area.
"This incident exposed loopholes in our system and inadequate daily management," the center said, offering a public apology. Authorities have launched an investigation and promised disciplinary action against those responsible.
