Power Bank Fire on Shanghai Metro Platform Quickly Contained

A passenger's power bank caught fire on a platform at Shanghai's Metro Line 15 on Monday, but the incident was handled swiftly and did not disrupt subway operations, according to the city's fire authorities.
The fire broke out at Shanghai West Railway Station, where a power bank carried by a passenger suddenly ignited on the platform. On-site staff immediately activated emergency procedures and used a fire extinguisher to put out the flames within moments.
Surveillance footage shows that as the passenger descended from an escalator to the platform, flames were already visible on one side of the person's jacket. Nearby passengers quickly noticed the danger and moved away from the area.
Preliminary findings indicate that the power bank was purchased in December last year and carried a valid China Compulsory Certification (3C) mark. It was not being used or charged at the time of the incident.
Fire officials said the risk of power bank combustion is not limited to the charging process. Even when idle, devices can ignite due to factors such as internal short circuits, exposure to high temperatures, or microscopic battery damage caused by previous improper charging.
