Shanghai Metro Extends Night Services to Ease Holiday Travel Rush

To ease nighttime congestion during the National Day holiday, the Shanghai Metro will extend its operating hours and add extra trains on several lines.

From tonight, Metro Line 9 will run until midnight, with the last train departing Shanghai Songjiang Railway Station at 12am for Middle Yanggao Road.

The extended service will stop only at key stations: Songjiang Sports Center, Songjiang University Town, Sheshan, Jiuting, Zhongchun Road, Qibao, Guilin Road, Xujiahui, Lujiabang Road, Century Avenue and Middle Yanggao Road.

Passengers may board or alight only at these stations.

From October 7 to 8, late-night services will also be added on Lines 1, 2, 10 and 17, with final departures at midnight. Shanghai Metro said it will continue to monitor passenger flows at the Hongqiao Transport Hub and adjust schedules when necessary.

Line 1 will serve only Xinzhuang, Shanghai South Railway Station, Xujiahui, People's Square, Shanghai Railway Station, Shanghai Circus World, Pengpu Xincun and the terminal station Fujin Road.

Line 2 will stop at Hongqiao Railway Station, Hongqiao Airport T2, Songhong Road, Zhongshan Park, People's Square, Century Avenue and Longyang Road.

Line 10 will include Hongqiao Railway Station, Hongqiao Airport T2 and T1, Shanghai Zoo, Hongqiao Road, South Shaanxi Road, East Nanjing Road, Hailun Road, Siping Road and Wujiaochang.

Line 17 will serve Hongqiao Railway Station, North Xujing Road, Huijin Road, Caoying Road, Zhujiajiao and Xicen.

From October 1 to 4 – the first four days of the Mid-Autumn and National Day holiday – the city's outbound passenger volume reached 3.67 million, a 15.6 percent increase year on year, according to the Shanghai Traffic Command Center.

Inbound travelers totaled 2.66 million, up 7.3 percent from 2024.

Highway traffic hit 6.62 million vehicle trips, a 0.6 percent rise from a year earlier, including 1.69 million cross-province trips (up 2.9 percent).

Expressway traffic reached 9.80 million vehicle trips, down 2.9 percent year on year.
