Five Chinese nationals were allegedly detained by a group of Thai police officers on false charges of immigration violations in the early hours of May 16, reported Red Star News today. The officers reportedly demanded US$10,000 per person for their release.

The incident took place around 2am local time in the border district of Sa Kaeo Province. To make the operation appear legitimate, the suspects followed what seemed to be standard law enforcement procedures, handcuffing the victims and subjecting them to verbal intimidation.

Instead of being taken to a police station, the five Chinese nationals were brought to an unnumbered residence in Wang Mai subdistrict. There, they were held illegally and threatened with ransom demands: US$10,000 per person in exchange for their freedom.

Under duress, two of the victims transferred money via their mobile phones. According to transaction records, each sent US$2,000. Digital transfer receipts were later obtained by investigators.

At approximately 11am on May 16, the captives managed to send a distress signal via a social media app to an immigration officer stationed in Pathum Thani Province, taking advantage of a lapse in supervision by their guards.

Authorities moved quickly. A joint task force comprising the Sa Kaeo Immigration Office, local police, military personnel, and border patrol was formed. Around 7:30pm the same day, law enforcement raided the property involved. The five Chinese nationals were rescued.

Five suspects were arrested at the scene, including four active-duty police officers and one civilian. Victims have identified a sixth suspect – also a police officer – who is still at large after reportedly leaving to buy food and drinks just before the raid. A manhunt is underway.

Weapons and ammunition were seized during the raid, including multiple handguns, two pickup trucks, and ammunition.

The four police officers face multiple charges, including illegal detention, abuse of power for extortion, and corruption. The civilian suspect is charged with aiding and abetting a public official in committing a crime. All five have denied the allegations during preliminary questioning.
