Shanghai's Metro Line 22, formerly known as the Chongming Line, is expected to begin trial operations by the end of 2026, Hu Liuqiang, deputy director of Chongming District, said at a press briefing on Wednesday.

The new line will link to two existing metro lines, reducing travel times between Chongming and Shanghai's downtown area.

Once in service, the trip from Dongtan in eastern Chongming to Pudong's Jinqiao area will take about 30 minutes. The new metro line will have transfer options at Jinji Road on Line 9 and Shenjiang Road on Line 12, according to earlier maps released by the Shentong Metro Group. With transfers, passengers will reach People's Square in roughly an hour.

Besides, the Shanghai–Chongqing–Chengdu High-Speed Railway remains on schedule for completion in 2029. From Chongming's Chengqiao Town, the journey will take around 20 minutes to Baoshan Station and about 40 minutes to Hongqiao Station.

Chongming has nearly completed its main road network, with 105 kilometers of major roads, including newly constructed or upgraded roads such as Chongming Avenue, Beiyan Road, Jianshe Road and Chenhai Road.

Meanwhile, Chongming has made steady progress in developing its ecological economy and modern agricultural sector over the past five years.

Green and organic agriculture, along with eco-friendly industries, are essential economic pillars for the district. It is leading an ecological development strategy and aims to become a benchmark for green and ecological progress in the country.

"Protecting our ecological environment will undoubtedly transform our green mountains and clear waters into social and economic wealth," said Li Jun, Party Secretary of Chongming.

In 2024, the district's gross domestic product reached 44.881 billion yuan (US$6.3 billion), with an industrial added value of 58.46 billion yuan from enterprises with annual business revenues exceeding 20 million yuan. This reflects growth rates of 17.5 percent and 29.2 percent compared to the end of 2020.

Over the last five years, nearly 5 billion yuan has been invested to establish and launch 33 urban modern agriculture projects, with 80 agricultural science and technology initiatives approved for implementation.

Chongming's modern green agricultural brands have garnered nationwide recognition.

More than 90 percent of the district's areas are certified origins for green and high-quality agricultural products, and the total agricultural output value is projected to reach 5.56 billion yuan by 2025.

Agricultural products have been distributed across the country via e-commerce channels. Additionally, the per capita disposable income of residents rose from 29,457 yuan in 2020 to 40,612 yuan in 2024, a 37.9 percent increase.

"We remain committed to further utilizing Chongming's agricultural strengths and enhancing the rural landscape to enrich the lives of farming communities, positioning ourselves as leaders in promoting rural revitalization," said Lu Chenfei, deputy Party secretary of Chongming District and acting director.
