A small act of concern in Shanghai has turned into a moment of collective support after a video of an elderly delivery rider struggling with a wind-toppled scooter drew widespread attention online.

The incident happened on March 2 near the Kerry Centre in Jing'an District, Xinmin Evening News reported.

A shop assistant surnamed Zhang had been filming the strong winds outside her clothing store when she saw a parked electric scooter blown over by a sudden gust. Meals and drinks meant for delivery customers spilled across the pavement.

When the rider returned and saw what had happened, he appeared briefly stunned, standing beside the overturned scooter and scattered orders.

"Seeing him standing there, completely at a loss, it was really heartbreaking," Zhang told reporters.

Concerned that the rider might be penalized by the delivery platform for the ruined orders and delays, Zhang posted the video online, hoping it might help explain what had happened.

The clip soon drew nearly four million views. Many viewers left messages asking the platform not to fine the rider, tagging the company's official account in the comments.

The platform responded directly in the comments section, stating, "Upon verification, no penalty was issued to this rider that day. We do not impose penalties for delivery issues caused by severe weather conditions."

Adding to the wave of support, the restaurant that prepared the order also appeared in the comments, assuring the public that they would not hold the rider responsible for the losses.

Zhang said she was surprised by how quickly people rallied behind someone they had never met.

"I thought maybe a few people would speak up," she said. "I didn't expect so many."
