[The Big List] NYE Parties, Fireworks, Drone Shows, and MORE
As the clock ticks toward midnight and the city slips into winter mode, Shanghai doesn't settle for a single way to welcome the New Year. Instead, it spreads the celebration across rooftops, riversides, concert halls, malls, parks, and neighborhood streets – loud or low-key, late-night or daylight, grown-up or kid-friendly.
This guide looks beyond the usual club-heavy countdown lists. Alongside nightlife picks, you'll find places to watch drone shows and fireworks, symphony concerts and cultural performances, family-friendly activities, outdoor gatherings, and calm alternatives for those who'd rather skip the crush altogether. Whether you're counting down with a cocktail, a stroller, a seat at the orchestra, or a view of the sky, here's where Shanghai is ringing in the New Year – in all its many moods, and within its many districts.
Editor's Picks
1. ALTER. x Social Supply Hotel Take-Over
Reader Perks: Leave a witty comment on this article, then share it to your WeChat Moments and send a screenshot to our official WeChat account. We'll select five lucky winners, each receiving two countdown party tickets with free-flow included (worth 1,978 yuan/US$282.3).
For the past six-ish years, Shanghai's New Year's Eve hierarchy has been pretty clear: ALTER.'s hotel takeovers sit firmly at the top. No real debate. These are the parties that make everything else feel… fine. Yearly they routinely clear the 1,000 mark in ticket sales, and showing up without one is a rookie mistake you'll regret by 11:30pm (trying to get tickets at the door not recommended).
So naturally, it seemed impossible to top them.
Then ALTER. teamed up with Social Supply – yes, that Social Supply. Camden Hauge's festival-producing, crowd-wrangling, food-and-wine empire. At which point expectations quietly reset to "oh, this could be huge."
In year's past, it was just a hotel party. This year, you can add-on a dinner phase which kicks the night off with a Walking Supperclub by May Chow, which is exactly as appealing as it sounds. No banquet tables. No assigned seating. No being trapped next to someone you met five minutes ago. Instead, it's a guided, multi-space food experience through the brand-new Thompson Hotel – great food, constant movement and just enough structure to keep things flowing. It's dinner for people who hate sitting still, which in Shanghai is most people. This is perfect if you DO NOT want to have dinner and party plans separate (everyone knows the trauma of trying to get Didis on New Years Eve).
After that, ALTER. does what ALTER. does best.
Their parties have earned their reputation across China: open, inclusive crowds; spaces that encourage frolicking, friend-making; and music that's consistently, reliably on point. Enzo and his team are very good at party design.
What pushes this year into full send territory is the venue. This is a complete takeover of the brand-new Thompson Hotel, which if you aren't familiar with the brand, it's okay, it's their first property in Asia. Part of the Hyatt group, Thompson Hotels are upper-upscale. Indoor and outdoor spaces, multiple moods, and then the real closer: a 270-degree view of the Bund, the Huangpu River, and the China Pavilion lighting up the countdown.
If you're going to do New Year's properly this year, not "casual drinks" properly, but commit-to-the-night properly... this is the one.
2. ALTER. x Sugar House Countdown Party @ Alila Shanghai
Reader Perks: Leave a witty comment on this article, then share it to your WeChat Moments and send a screenshot to our official WeChat account. We'll select five lucky winners, each receiving two countdown party tickets with 1 glass of Perrier Jouet Champagne included (worth 656 yuan).
ALTER. is doing a second event teaming up with Sugar House to close out 2025 with a multi-room New Year's Eve takeover at Alila Shanghai. Running from 9pm into the early hours, the party spreads across three distinct spaces – two indoors and one open-air – each with its own sound, setup and bar. Sugar House parties, as all ALTER. events are also known for being open-minded and inclusive.
The rooftop Countdown Stage hosts the midnight moment, with live band Wave 9, DJ Victor Aime, gourmet bites and a holographic cold-fireworks show as the clock hits twelve. Secret Roof offers a more intimate, panoramic setting curated by ALTER., blending live performance and DJ sets, while the Sugar House Room delivers high-energy hip-hop, R&B, afro and house from Sugar House's resident DJs.
