The Shanghai West Bund Theater premiered Lu Chuan's dance play "Tiangong Kaiwu" (The Exploitation of the Works of Nature) on August 15.

Lu's crossover attempt recounts the biography of ancient Chinese scientist Song Yingxing, as well as the different agricultural and handicraft skills he listed in the famed 17th-century Chinese encyclopedia "Tiangong Kaiwu."

To give viewers a taste of the cultural charm of the dance play, "YUE FUN," a themed market on "Tiangong Kaiwu," is hosted concurrently at the theater.

"'Tiangong Kaiwu' fits the vibe of Xuhui District," said deputy director Chen Shen of the Culture and Tourism Bureau. "It is a book related to agriculture and technology, and scientist Xu Guangqi (1562-1633), who has a deep connection with Xuhui, also made many innovations in agricultural technology and many other fields."

"We introduced some handicrafts, intangible cultural heritage items, as well as some books related to science and technology, and it allows everyone to not only appreciate the drama but also experience the changes brought by technological innovation and handicrafts in our lives."
