[Quick News] Tornados Spotted in Shanghai! Blue Alert Cancelled.
Earlier today, Typhoon Pulasan made an unexpected turn north west. This created unique conditions that were favorable to Tornados. In fact, folks spotted one in Qingpu!
So… Tornados in Shanghai?
Yes, you read that right. A supercell caused by the storm's direction change created conditions favorable for tornados.
Earlier this afternoon (September 20), eagle-eyed residents in Qingpu snapped videos and photos of what sure looks like a tornado near Wanda Plaza. The pictures were shared by the Weibo user weather-obsessed account "@中国气象爱好者," and sure enough, meteorologists are backing it up. They're calling it a funnel cloud from a supercell storm – a fancy way of saying, "Yep, that's a tornado." Although this tornado was relatively weak and short-lived.
Orange Wind Warnings Downgraded:
Earlier today, the meteorological bureau upgraded several districts to orange wind warnings, just one step below "red alert, run for cover." Baoshan, Qingpu, Minhang, Chongming, and Pudong were under this warning, with wind gusting at over 119 km/h.
However, since then, the city bureau has canceled the Yellow Lightning Alert and removed the rain alerts for the city.
Some Areas Still Flooded:
Since our last update, Shanghai has experienced more flooding. The Shanghai Flood Control Office and Shanghai Fire Departments have a number mobile pump trucks to reduce flooding in some regions of the city. 114 residential communities, 43 road sections, and 22 underpasses are still experiencing standing water.
So, if you're out on the road tonight, be aware that some parts of the city are still experiencing standing water.
And if the idea of tornadoes blowing through Shanghai sounds a bit too crazy to believe – well, welcome to 2024. Stay safe, folks.
