Shenzhen-listed display manufacturer Tianma Microelectronics Co announced a significant breakthrough in Micro-LED transparent technology at the China International Import Expo, unveiling products that can effectively transform "glass into a display."

The transparent Micro-LED (micro-light-emitting diode) devices were showcased at a subforum of CIIE, featuring exhibits up to 9 inches in size and highlighting advantages such as high brightness, adjustable transparency, low reflection, and ultra-narrow bezels.

Industry officials from the display association, Tianma, and Xpeng remarked that this development represents a critical turning point for display technology, paving the way for new applications in immersive digital entertainment and automotive displays.

Peng Jianfeng, vice president of the China Electronic Video Industry Association, emphasized that innovation in display technology is at a pivotal moment. Micro-LED technology, particularly in transparent displays, is transforming traditional displays from simple information terminals into interactive interfaces that can seamlessly integrate with their surrounding environments.

Tianma, a long-established player in the market for phone and automotive displays, as well as flexible OLEDs (organic light-emitting diodes), has been developing Micro-LED technology since 2017, successfully overcoming key technical challenges.

Xpeng's expert, Zhu Yonggang, praised the technology's potential for intelligent cockpits, envisioning a shift where displays transition from being mere "screens" to becoming integral "spaces."

Nonetheless, both Tianma and Xpeng acknowledged that the path to commercialization still encounters hurdles, particularly concerning cost and energy consumption.

Zhu noted that the technology is currently likely only suitable for high-end vehicles, such as those priced above 500,000 yuan (about US$70,000), indicating it is not yet economically viable for their existing models.
